Remembering Laura Fish
Sadly, our 2022 SI Readers’ Choice Award winner, Dr. Laura Fish, passed away shortly before the publication of her prize-winning novel, Lying Perfectly Still.
This important and beautifully written novel gives voice to the women of Eswatini in southern Africa, ravaged by the AIDS epidemic of the late twentieth century. Laura was in the country in the ‘90s and saw the impact it had upon women and families. Lying Perfectly Still is told through the eyes of Koliwe, a troubled young woman of mixed-race heritage, searching for her African roots, while overwhelmed by the devastation of the country she finds and the inadequacy and corruption at the heart of the aid community for which she works.
It is Laura’s third novel. You can read more about her legacy here.
